AAUW's Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education. Founded in 1981, LAF helps students, faculty, staff and administrators challenge discriminatory practices involving:

  • sexual harassment
  • denial of tenure or promotion
  • pay inequity
  • inequality in women's athletics programs

Since its founding LAF has supported over 100 cases and contributed more than $1,000,000 towards these cases.

Congratulations to NYS! The Association has announced that LAF giving for the state in 2007 was second in the country overall AND ninth on a per capita basis!

NYS LAF Vice President, Mildred DeWitt, is available to speak to a group about the importance of the Legal Advocacy Fund in helping women who have experienced sex discrimination in academia. Contact her for arrangements or information.

Previous LAF VP Cheryl Papa has made available many hints on working with your branches to support the Legal Advocacy Fund. She has also written a readers' theater which explains concisely what LAF is all about.
