Poughkeepsie notification – “Commission on the Status of Women at the UN from March 6-15”

March 6, 2023 - March 17, 2023

Commission on the Status of Women

March seems far away, when we’re still looking forward to the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend but it would be good to get a head start on planning for participating in the Commission on the Status of Women – either virtually or in person.   At least, mark your calendar for March 15th for Gloria Blackwell’s AAUW National presentation from 2-4.

This year it’s possible to attend the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN from March 6-15 either virtually or in person.  Many of the presentations will be available online.  In the past, NYC area members attended in person in NYC when AAUW National was presenting.  This year, Gloria Blackwell is presenting for AAUW National but her presentation will be virtual on March 15.  Tentatively, the Poughkeepsie Branch will plan a Zoom meeting on March 16th to discuss her presentation and share brief summaries of any other presentations that you attend or reactions to the conference in general.

WHOVA is being used for registration, viewing the agenda, and viewing virtual presentations.  Registration is open and you can register now by downloading the WHOVA app on your android or Apple device or going to    https://whova.com/portal/webapp/ngocs1_202303/ on your PC. If you use a PC do save the email they send you for easy sign in since you will not have the app.

You can register either to attend in person, to attend virtually, or to attend both virtually and in person.

General information is available at https://ngocsw.org/

If you register to attend (it’s free!) you can scan the agenda – the conference lasts for 2 weeks and there are often 20+ presentations per day which can seem overwhelming.  You select to see only virtual presentations or all presentations.

This is a great opportunity to get a global perspective on what different organizations are doing around the world to support women and girls in their careers and exploring Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.  If you are night owl, some of the presentations from Asia are in the middle of the night;  if you are a morning person some of the presentations begin at 5am – bottom line, you should find time in your day to view at least one of the presentations – and viewing them virtually, if it turns out it’s not of interest to you, you can always tune out!!
