NYS on Open Membership – Listen, Learn, Share Thoughts

January 23 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

For what seems like forever, AAUW has debated the idea of Open Membership. When the organization was in its infancy, back in the late 1800s, membership was limited to women who were graduates of colleges and schools which had been “approved”. The doors have been opening gradually – accredited schools instead of “approved” schools, the admission of men as members, graduates of nursing schools and junior colleges, “student associates”, etc. The final step is what the board is suggesting and recommending we do – admit as a full member “any individual who supports AAUW’s important mission of advancing equity for women and girls.

There are strong feelings on both sides of this argument. The proposal has been put to a vote of the membership at least 5-6 times, going down to defeat every time. Is this the time it will pass? If it does, will we lose some members?

Save the date to bring your ideas to a thoughtful and respectful meeting of AAUW-NYS presidents and membership people led by President Carol Griffith and Membership Director Tracy Gyoerkoe. For those who are not available during the day, there will be another session on Jan 31 at 7:00 pm.
